The model I use with organisations across many different industries is to initially establish what is needed and to then create a tailored programme that might include any combination of the following topics:
- Communication skills: verbal and nonverbal communication, active listening, coaching skills and public speaking.
- Emotional intelligence: the ability to recognise, understand, and manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others along with showing empathy, vulnerability, self-awareness, and relationship management.
- Creative thinking: creatively and critically considering complex problems and developing solutions that align with an organisation’s goals including problem-solving techniques, decision-making, and risk assessment.
- Team building: building trust, psychological safety, team dynamics, motivation, delegation, and performance management to help build a high performing team
- Values and culture: creating a vision, a positive employee experience, promoting diversity and inclusion, and ethical leadership.
- Time management: the need to balance multiple responsibilities, set effective goals, prioritise and delegate well.
- Change management: managing resistance to change, communicating change, and implementing change effectively.
The best way to develop management and leadership skills is through practice. Those taking part in sessions are encouraged to take every opportunity to put what they’ve learned into action, and for reflections on this experience to be explored to enhance learning. This could be anything from leading a meeting at work to giving feedback on an employee’s performance.
